STATEMENT: ANROEV Mourns the Death of Semiconductor Researcher Kim Chi-yeop and Calls for Justice Against Overwork Culture

February 2, 2026

The Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV) expresses its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and co-workers of Kim Chi-yeop, a young semiconductor researcher whose death is linked to excessive work pressure and the denial of rest and care while he was unwell.

We stand in solidarity with our network member SHARPS (South Korea) in calling for truth, accountability, and justice. This tragedy reflects a broader and persistent failure to protect workers from overwork and work-related mental health risks under performance-driven systems.

No worker should suffer or die because of their job. The right to rest, to health, and to safe, humane, and dignified working conditions must be guaranteed.
