Statement of Solidarity and Condemnation on the Threats Against Lennon Ying-Da Wang and Kuang-Yu Tu
The Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV) strongly condemns the threats and planned acts of violence against Lennon Ying-Da Wang, Director of Policies on Migrant Workers at the Serve the People Association (SPA), and his colleague, Kuang-Yu Tu.
SPA, an independent organization in Taiwan, has long been committed to advancing the rights and welfare of migrant workers. In recent months, Lennon and SPA have been supporting the TaiDoc Technology Labor Union (TTLU), whose membership is composed largely of Filipino migrant workers, in their legitimate efforts to uphold dignity, fair treatment, and fundamental labor rights.
The situation faced by TTLU is deeply concerning. The union has reported persistent union-busting practices by TaiDoc Technology Corp., including the dismissal of union members and its chairperson, refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue, and the enforcement of excessively restrictive policies on migrant workers — particularly in relation to dormitory management — which the union alleges may amount to conditions of forced labor.
Rather than addressing these serious concerns, the company has reportedly shifted blame onto so-called “external actors,” specifically targeting Lennon and SPA for supporting workers in exercising their rights. This has contributed to a climate of hostility and danger. Most alarmingly, Lennon was informed of credible threats emerging from an employment brokers’ online group, in which individuals allegedly discussed plans to abduct him and his colleague and to hire someone to carry out acts of violence against them.
ANROEV unequivocally condemns these threats. Violence and intimidation have no place in any society, and such actions represent a grave attack not only on the individuals targeted but also on the fundamental freedoms of migrant workers — the right to organize, to speak out, and to seek justice without fear of retaliation.
These threats reflect a broader pattern of hostility toward migrant workers, trade union organizing, and those who stand in solidarity with them. Efforts to silence advocates and dismantle collective action in pursuit of profit demonstrate a profound disregard for human dignity and rights.
The work of Lennon Ying-Da Wang and SPA is both legitimate and necessary. Advocacy for migrant workers is not a provocation; it is a defense of basic human rights. When workers are denied a voice, it becomes all the more urgent for others to stand alongside them. Attempts to suppress this work through fear and violence only stress the importance and impact of their efforts.
We call on the Government of Taiwan, particularly the Ministry of Labor, as well as the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), to uphold their responsibility to protect migrant workers’ rights, including freedom of association and the right to humane working and living conditions. We further urge law enforcement authorities to treat the threats against Lennon Ying-Da Wang and Kuang-Yu Tu with the utmost seriousness and to take immediate measures to ensure their safety and hold those responsible accountable.
As a regional network dedicated to protecting lives from occupational and environmental harm, ANROEV affirms that the right to organize is inseparable from the right to safety, dignity, and life itself. No individual should face threats, violence, or death for defending these principles.
We stand in full solidarity with the TaiDoc Technology Labor Union, Lennon Ying-Da Wang, and Kuang-Yu Tu.
