Justice for Bhopal Gas Victims

December 4, 2024

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Disaster, a catastrophe that remains the world’s worst industrial disaster. On December 3, 1984, a toxic cloud of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India. Within days, thousands perished, and over the years, tens of thousands more have succumbed to its aftermath. Over 500,000 survivors continue to endure chronic illnesses, poisoned water, and a lifelong struggle for justice.

The tragedy of Bhopal is not an isolated incident. In 2020, a deadly styrene gas leak in Vizag, India echoed the negligence, poor safety standards, and corporate irresponsibility that marked Bhopal. These ongoing “mini-Bhopal’s” reminds the urgent need to fight for corporate accountability, stronger safety standards, and advance victims’ rights and empowerment.

The Bhopal survivors have taught us the power of solidarity and persistence. Over four decades, coalitions like the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJB) have stood firm in demanding justice, compensation, and environmental remediation. Their journey inspired countless groups, such as the LG Vizag Victims Association, to build victims’ movements that hold negligent corporations accountable.

To honor the victims and survivors of Bhopal, we invite you to join the week-long commemoration (December 1-7) of the 40th anniversary under the theme, Remember Bhopal, Fight for Justice. Through this initiative, we aim to highlight:

  • the continued struggles of Bhopal survivors for justice and compensation;
  • the ongoing risks of industrial disasters, as seen in LG Vizag India and other places.
  • the power of victims’ groups in building movements for change.

Let us unite to ensure that no community endures another Bhopal. By forming strong victims’ groups and networks, supporting victims’ struggles, and holding corporations accountable, we can help in making healthier and safer workplaces and environments.
